Tamper-Evident with NFC

Smart labels make drug packaging tamper-resistant

According to Regulation (EU) 2016/161 that came into force on February 9, 2019, each drug pack has to carry a unique serial number combined with a 2D DataMatrix barcode. In addition, pharmaceutical packages must be tamper-resistant and contain security features that allow their authentication. Tamper protection is to be provided in accordance with EN 16679:2015-03 and can be ensured, for example, by tamper-evident labels.

To make packaging tamper-resistant, Faubel also uses NFC technology. By combining tamper-evident labels with NFC tags, we can obtain digital seals that provide the level of product protection required. In their smart version, tamper-evident labels are able to identify whether a product has been opened or otherwise tampered with. The status is then transmitted to the user when queried on an NFC-enabled smartphone.

The user receives a clear statement as to whether his drug package is intact or has been tampered with.
